When I bought this old brood mare, I believe she was 15 or 16 yrs old, I never dreamed that she would be stolen from me in the future. Does that kind of thing really happen still? Yes, it does. Sadly Wyoming had several horse theft cases that year and every year after. I learned that it is more common than you would think. What kind of person does that to another? Granted it's not like I lost another human being from my life, but the loss financially as well as future of those registered mares in my breeding program will never be able to reach their full potential, ever.
Spring of 1999 brought a crop of new foals and that old ragged looking broodmare gave me a beautiful blue roan filly, of which I only bragged about to one good, trusted friend and to the original breeder of this old mare who had offered her for sale to me in the beginning. Maybe a mistake for bragging? But should it ever be? I don't know, but I was proud of that little blue roan filly, she was cute and compact, with a baby doll head, just like her beautiful sire. Who would think that could lead to the events of fall 1999. It wasn't even in my realm of thinking.
By fall 1999 it was obvious that no only was my bay mare and blue roan filly gone from the mountain pastures above our ranch, but also a beautiful red dun mare that the old bay mare had taken under her wing as a new comer to my herd. I was in the process of buying the red dun mare from a neighbor from Ten Sleep. Skipping ahead, horse tracks were found late in November 1999 with two people on horse back leading my mare and foal out to the north toward the Hyattville Logging Road. Barbed wire was cut and they loaded my horses to never be seen again by me. Perhaps you have seen them? I realize that the old mare is gone by now and technically so should the blue roan mare be gone too, but we still have a corral mate of hers living and doing well. It is possible that she's still out there.
